The Importance of Getting Building Permits

Hey folks, I'm just getting my car serviced and figured I'd shoot you a real quick video. Something came to my mind about getting permits, and I want to give you an example of how it came back to bite somebody for not getting a permit.

We were called out to check on a job. It seems that this dentist here in town finished off the third floor of his home and he didn’t want to get a permit. Of course, once you get a permit, you include the square footage and the cost of the house. The house goes up in value, and your taxes go up. So, you know, he saved a little bit of money and didn’t get a permit.

The Problem

The problem is, this was a fairly huge attic, probably about 50 feet by maybe 20. So you're looking at a substantial room up there, or multiple rooms. Matter of fact, two bedrooms and a bathroom. And again, no permits.

The Consequences

Well, it came time for him to sell the house, and the realtor is looking and doing their measurements. They see the square footage and they have to go online to see what the tax map says. And it says, this doesn’t jive. There’s more square footage than what’s on the tax map.

To make a long story short, the city found out about it, sent an inspector out there, and made him rip everything out. All the sheetrock, all the insulation, everything had to come out so that the inspector could make sure it’s all put back in properly.

A Costly Mistake

This guy saved a couple of dollars and it ended up costing about fifteen thousand dollars to rip it all out and put it back together again. So just a word to y’all out there , if you don’t want to get a permit for big jobs like that... mm-hmm, pay me now, pay me later. Sometimes it’s just not worth it.

Don’t be like this guy. He might make a lot of money as a dentist, but man, that had to hurt. He needed some strong novocaine for that pill. Alright, you guys make it a great day, and if you have questions about permits, give us a call. I’ll let you know. Thanks..
